First up on our list of places to see in Seattle: Pike Place Market. Jay has been obsessed with this place since he watched an episode on the Travel Channel that featured the “flying fish”; and I’m never one to pass up a good market. Naturally, we headed there on our first lazy Sunday in Seattle.
There was so much to see (and eat)! Our plan to beeline for the Pike Place Fish Co. followed by a leisurely stroll through the market was thwarted by all of the vendors forcing us to sample their delicious goods along the way. Not to mention the time spent obsessing over the wine racks made from reconstructed oak barrels that would be perfect for our home (despite the obvious cost to ship it to Pennsylvania); and the endless sea of flowers. Oh, the peonies.
Needless to stay, we allowed ourselves to get distracted & wander aimlessly among the aisle of flowers, jams, and knick-knacks. It was definitely a better plan.
Every time someone purchased a fish, it was sent sailing through the air before it was wrapped and bagged to take home. The crowd, Jay included, went wild! Oh, the simple pleasures in life. Growing up in a household where fishing was a favorite pastime, there was never a shortage of smelly, slimy, scaly stuff around, so I was the buzzkill in the audience standing quietly. I was so happy that Jay’s got his fix of “flying fish” though!
We ventured across the street and that’s when we stumbled on “Rubiks Cube Ron.” Mind-blown. The man solved a Rubiks Cube in 60 seconds, one-handed, while simultaneously spinning a record on the other hand and hula-hooping. I walked away envious of his multitasking abilities. I mean, can you imagine all the things you could get done in a day with those skills?
There was a lot to take in at the market. It was hard to choose what we enjoyed the most – the atmosphere, yummy (free) samples, beautiful hand-made crafts or fresh produce – but in the end, I think the view of the pier & the Great Wheel from the Chef’s Garden, alone, was worth the trip.
