Halfway through Maryland I discovered that my Nikon was still sitting pretty on my nightstand back in Pennsylvania. Would you settle for grainy, but decent iPhone pics? Good, because that’s all I have to offer.
Despite our best efforts to leave before 4PM, we weren’t able to leave until nearly 6PM. A good time to leave if you want to be stuck in traffic for a while. If we didn’t already have dinner plans we probably would have waited until traffic died down, but Korean BBQ with Gaby & Jamie (whom we were meeting for the very first time) were already on the agenda.
After sitting in traffic for a long time, we finally weaseled our way off of the 95-South and re-routed ourselves through the backroads of PA & Maryland. It was a wise decision, but we made it a little late. The backroads were wide open with almost no other cars on the road. There was however an amish man driving a horse & buggy– so cool! We also drove passed a lot of barns, silos, and cornfields, which I found to be quite beautiful…but then the horror-film junkie in me kicked in and I was relieved to leave that scenery in our rearview mirror.
By 10PM we were passing the Lincoln Memorial and soon after, the pentagon. Not more than ten minutes later we pulled into Gaby’s condo. Unfortunately, our late arrival kinda messed with our dinner plans and Jamie had already knocked out for the night. After begging Gaby to feed me, we headed to Honey Pig – a 24-hour Korean BBQ restaurant in Annandale.
The food was good; and not just because I skipped lunch and was trapped in the car without snacks for over four hours. We were promptly asked to leave after paying the bill because there were customers waiting for a table. I have never been asked to leave a restaurant; let alone by a woman with a humongous grin on her face. There’s a first time for everything! Truthfully, her mannerisms (and that grin) were so comical, it was hard to be upset with the situation. Guess you had to be there.
The rest of the weekend passed by too quickly in a blur of sugaring (a sadistic post for another time, ha), gummy bear martinis poolside, “tanning” under overcast skies, delicious food (sushi, peruvian chicken, japanese cheesecake, and Jonana’s concoction of waffles, salami, and mushroom scramble), furbabies, new friendships, and what felt a lot like quality family-time. J, Reesie, and I had a blast!
Thanks for your hospitality, Virginia family!
