A happy, healthy marriage takes work and ours is no exception, but it shouldn’t have to feel like work. I’m beyond blessed that being with Jay never, ever does. He may drive me bonkers with his inability to close a cabinet; or turn off the light upon leaving a room; or refusing to put his dirty clothes in the hamper…but he shows his thoughtfulness in other ways. Like, waking up a little earlier to make breakfast for me or putting gas in my car so I don’t have to. He is always supportive of me and my dreams. And when I have a hard day, I can always count on him to wrap me in his arms & make me laugh. To be honest, I’m not quite sure how I got so lucky.
In the last five years, we have grown enormously as a couple. We thought it was important to celebrate all of our blessings and struggles in a big way for this milestone anniversary. For months we searched for the perfect little getaway for our anniversary. Unfortunately, our schedules wouldn’t allow for much “getting away.” At least not to anywhere exotic. In the end, the unruly New England weather (that I love) got in the way, so we decided to save some money and stay home. At first we were so disappointed, but we decided to just roll with it & it turned out to be the best anniversary we’ve celebrated to date.
We caught a matinee showing of Olympus Has Fallen and sat in traffic for almost two hours (a lot of out-of-town visitors for the marathon) trying to get to the restaurant in downtown. That gave us a lot of time to just talk & enjoy each other’s company. Plus, I had more than enough time to woo annoy him with my singing. (Think scene from The Heartbreak Kid). No matter what he may tell you, he loved it.
By the time we reached the restaurant, we were so hungry which was a good thing because they stuffed us full of cheese, salad, meat, and chocolate– definitely worth the wait. Dinner was a ton of fun! The best part: Jay was forced to eat at my pace & didn’t have to awkwardly watch me finish eating.
It’s true, our anniversary wasn’t the elaborate celebration we had envisioned, but it was perfect for us. A quiet celebration for two filled with lots of fun & love – all of the things we hoped our marriage would be when we started our journey five years ago. Who knew that our typical date night would be the perfect way to celebrate.
